Barbara Buchwach

Our beloved Barbara “Barb” Anne Buchwach (Griffin), age 67, passed away peacefully at home on December 19, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Barb later made her home in Wheeling, West Virginia, where she raised her family, built her career, and formed lifelong friendships that became the foundation of her life.

For Barb, family was everything. She was a devoted and loving mother to Danny (Cristin), Matt, and Leah (Clayton), and a cherished Nana to her grandsons, Will and Miles. She was the beloved daughter of the late Rose and Martin “Marty” Griffin, and is survived by her siblings Marty, Maria, Sandy, and Chris, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless dear friends.

Raised on Noble Street in Pittsburgh as the oldest of five, Barb was a natural caregiver from an early age. She put family first, carrying a deep sense of empathy and responsibility throughout her life. She married young and became a mother at 22, a role that guided her life and led her to Wheeling, where she would leave a lasting imprint on an entire community.

In Wheeling, Barb worked at The Linsly School, where she was known to many simply as “Mom.” As the girls’ dorm master, she built lifelong friendships and made a lasting difference in the lives of countless students through her steady presence, thoughtful guidance, and maternal spirit. She later built a successful career in sales, but at heart, she was always building community. Wherever she went, she stopped to connect, to listen, and to catch up. Around here, we lovingly called her the “Mayor.”

Known for her open door and open heart, Barb created a home filled with laughter, food, music, stories, advice, and love. People gathered there not just to celebrate, but to find comfort, connection, and compassion around her kitchen table. More than anything, Barb valued relationships. Her greatest gifts were her sincerity, generosity, and ability to truly listen. Her maternal care extended far beyond her own family, and she cared for people simply because they were people. Loving, present, and endlessly giving, she made every moment, and all of our lives, feel fuller.

The smell of a home-cooked meal, the rhythm of a familiar song, and the warmth of shared laughter is where Barb will always be found.
