Walter Zien

Walter Zien, a cherished member of the Wheeling, WV community, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026, at Liza’s Place – Valley Hospice Care Center South. Born on February 5, 1929, in Wheeling, WV, Walter lived a long and fulfilling life, reaching the age of 97.

Walter was the co-owner of Zien’s Restaurant, a beloved family-owned eatery that he ran alongside his late wife, Dolores “Bibi” Zien. The restaurant was a staple in the Wheeling community, known for its warm atmosphere and dedication to serving its patrons like family. Walter’s passion for his work was evident in the care he took to ensure every customer felt welcome and valued.

Beyond his professional life, Walter was deeply committed to his family and community. After graduating from High School, he served in the US Navy during the Korean War. Walter was a devoted member of several organizations, including Saints & Sinners, Knights of Columbus #504, Elm Grove Eagles, and the Cave Club. His faith was an integral part of his life, and he was a dedicated parishioner of both St. Michael Catholic Church and St. Mary- Our Lady of Perpetual Help Ukrainian Church.

Walter was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Dolores “Bibi” Zien; his sons, Luke and Mark Zien; his parents, Michael and Mary Zien; his brothers, John, Bill, Peter, and Andrew Zien; and his sisters, Genieve Birch, Ann Kuclo and Katherine Sadaly. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.

Walter Zien’s legacy is one of devotion to family, friends, and community. As he would often say; love God, family and country.

Friends will be received on Thursday, June 25, 2026 at 2:00 until 6:00 P.M. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, WV. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, June 26, 2026 at 9:00 A.M. at St. Michael’s Angelus Center, National Road, Wheeling, WV. Walter’s interment will immediately follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery with Military Honors.
