Charles Burney

Charles E. Burney, Sr., a devoted father, cherished friend, and proud community member, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026, at the age of 70, at WVU Medicine – Wheeling Hospital. Born on December 16, 1955, in Powhatan Point, Ohio, Charles spent his life devoted to both his work and his family.

Charles was a hard-working individual, dedicating many years of his career as a coal miner before transitioning to work at Wheeling Canvas Products, where he remained until his well-deserved retirement. Beyond his professional endeavors, he was known for his love of sports, especially as an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles. He cherished spending time with his family and enjoyed hosting cookouts, creating lasting memories with those closest to him.

A man of integrity and community spirit, Charles was a proud member of the American Legion Post 89 and the Elks Lodge 74, where he formed many meaningful friendships over the years. His sense of camaraderie and contribution to these organizations reflected his commitment to service and fellowship.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Mary Ellen (Donaldson) Burney; his brothers, Clarence Burney, Jr. and Jerry “Buck” Burney; and his special friend, Peaches.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Jocelyn (Wayne) Hall, Charles (Jessica) Burney, Jr., Christina Burney, and Vincent Burney; his brother, Eugene Burney; as well as his adored grandchildren: Breona, Bre’Aiza, Jamez, Deondre, De’Asia, Dre’Mare, Daelynn, and Dahrel; and great-grandchildren: Cavohn, Cai’Liek, Kapri, Kih’yan, Ma’Kai, and Ka’Liyah. He leaves behind his lifelong special friend, Felisa Cunningham, who held a special place in his heart.

A visitation will be held on Friday, July 3, 2026, from 1-3 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home, located at 1400 Eoff St., Wheeling, WV. Family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by Charles are invited to pay their respects and celebrate the life of a remarkable man.
