Lionel Lemoyne Persinger, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2026, at the age of 87 in Wheeling, West Virginia. Born on October 17, 1938, in Woodlands, West Virginia, Lionel lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his work, and his community.
Lionel was a devoted husband to the late Mary Lee Persinger and a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his son, Samuel (Kimberly) Persinger, and daughter, Mary Beth (Kevin) Chaplin. His legacy continues through his grandsons, Levi (Brittany) Persinger and Marshall (Jenna) Eckelberry, as well as Aaron (Kerry) Rine. He was blessed with great-grandchildren Easton, Walker, and Aspen Persinger, and Jaxson and Jensen Rine, along with many more grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, and family friends who will cherish his memory.
Lionel was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Lee Persinger; his parents, Thelma and Clayton Persinger; his brothers, Clayton Lee Persinger and George Persinger; and a close family friend, Robert Thomas Barr.
A man of steadfast work ethic, Lionel dedicated 41 years of service to PPG Industries. Prior to this, he honed his skills as a Union Carpenter. His commitment to his craft was matched only by his love for the outdoors, where he found joy in hunting and mowing hay. Lionel had a gift for storytelling, often reminiscing about his childhood memories, life adventures, and the lessons he learned along the way. He never met a stranger, always welcoming new friends into his life with warmth and kindness.
Lionel was an active member of his community, attending the Graysville United Methodist Church and participating in the Marshall Union No. 8 Masonic Lodge. He was also proud to be a 4H Pin Wearer, reflecting his lifelong commitment to learning and growth.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation on Friday, July 10, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home – Lutes and Kirby-Vance Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the same location, followed by interment at Graysville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Lionel may be made to Valley Hospice South Liza’s Place, honoring his spirit of generosity and care for others.
Lionel Lemoyne Persinger will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his work, and his community. His stories, laughter, and love will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
