James Mayfield, Jr.

James “Slick” Bennett Mayfield, Jr., 87, of Bridgeport, OH, passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2026 at Wheeling Hospital.

He was born on December 14, 1938, son of the late James B. Mayfield, Sr. and Harriet D. Dixon Mayfield.

Slick was an U.S. Army Veteran and retired as a Machinist for Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, Martins Ferry plant. He was a Catholic by faith.

He enjoyed talking to people, laughing, and joking. He liked sports, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. He gave a nickname to everyone he met.

In addition to his parents, Slick was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Alice, Betty Ann “Pretty Betty” and Ruth Etta Mayfield, and Darlene Turner; and a brother, Eldridge “Sippi” Mayfield.

Slick is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Eleanor “Cookie” Ann Kimbro Mayfield; daughter, Kimberly A. Wallace of Stockbridge, GA; son, James B. (Sabrina) Mayfield III of Odenton, MD; six grandchildren, Candice Phillips, Danielle Galloway, Xania Wallace, Quentin Wallace, Briana Mayfield, and Sydney Mayfield; two great-grandchildren, Raya Phillips and Kristian Phillips; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on Saturday, August 22, 2026 from 11 AM until the time of service at 1 PM at Kepner Funeral Homes, 900 National Road, Wheeling, WV (304-232-2732) with Gregory Ford officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, WV.
