James Hazlett

Benton Hazlett, 62, of Wheeling, WV, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2026, very unexpectedly at home surrounded by family and friends.

Benton was born in Newton, New Jersey, on June 20, 1964, to the late Fred and Linda Hazlett. Benton loved farming and his community. He was an avid WVU Mountaineer fan and a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, but, most of all, he loved his family. He retired after 17 years of service as a mechanic from the West Virginia Department of Highways (WVDOH) and was a member of the Sand Hill United Methodist Church where he served on multiple committees and sang in the choir.

Benton is survived by his wife Patty Hazlett; his two sons Ben and Andrew Hazlett; his sister Marie (Mitch) Zwick; niece Kimberly (Luke) Huffman and their daughter Kelsey; and nephew Keith (Jessica) Zwick and their son Conner. He also leaves behind two step-children Jared (Courtney) Henderson and Kayla Henderson; two step-grandchildren Hadley and Holt Henderson; and his mother-in-law, Susi Whitecotton; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as his fur babies, Sadie and Sara.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, from 10 AM until the time of the Memorial Service at 12 PM at Elm Grove United Methodist Church with Reverend Debra Dague presiding, assisted by Pastor Monica Salvo.
