Joann Mercer

Joann Mercer, born on July 16, 1941, in Wheeling, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026, in her hometown at the age of 84. She was a beloved mother, sister, grandma, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend to many.

Joann was a proud and devoted housekeeper, dedicating 20 years of service to the former Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC) until her well-deserved retirement. Outside her professional life, Joann found joy in the simple pleasures. She had a particular passion for word search puzzles and could often be found with a puzzle book in hand. Her love for soap operas was well-known; she delighted in her favorite shows and preferred not to be disturbed during her TV time. Shopping for clothes and shoes brought her happiness, as did indulging in Little Debbie Nutty Bars. Above all, Joann treasured the warmth and laughter that filled her home during the holidays, surrounded by her beloved family.

Joann was preceded in death by her parents, Charles L. and Della Mae (Grimm) Mercer; nine siblings: William Mercer, Charles Mercer, Harriett Anderson, Betty Loges, Ruby Foster, Helen Mercer, Rebecca Foreigner, Virginia Pelkey, and Mary Margaret Guenther; her longtime companion, George Forrester; and her daughter, Sharon West.

She is survived by her loving children: Penny (William) Schmitt, Michelle (Joel) Norris, George Mercer, Kim (Brent) Currence, and Daniel (Janet) Mercer. Joann’s legacy lives on through her 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

At the family’s request, there will be no public services. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.carechapel.com.

Joann will be profoundly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched throughout her life.
